The Founder of the NEB
Ursula von der Leyen
“If the European Green Deal has a soul, then it is the New European Bauhaus which has led to an explosion of creativity across our Union.”
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and the first woman to lead the EU’s executive body, founded the New European Bauhaus in 2020. A physician by training, she launched this initiative as a “project very dear to my heart” to give the European Green Deal a distinct aesthetic, believing that the fight against climate change must be sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls.
The New European Bauhaus
Designing a Beautiful, Sustainable, and Inclusive Future
The New European Bauhaus (NEB) is more than a policy initiative; it is a creative and transdisciplinary movement that calls on all Europeans to imagine and build a sustainable and inclusive future that is beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls. Launched in 2020 by the European Commission, it connects the European Green Deal to our living spaces and daily experiences, bringing together art, culture, science, and technology to address complex societal challenges through co-creation.
Since its inception, the NEB has inspired a vibrant grassroots community of nearly 2,000 members, including non-profits, businesses, public authorities, and citizens. This has resulted in almost 700 projects across Europe and beyond, promoting these values in research, urban development, and culture. The initiative has now entered a new phase to scale up its impact, focusing on enhancing circularity and innovation in the built environment, empowering citizens through participatory processes, and harnessing the transformative power of education, arts, and culture for local transformation.

At its heart, the NEB is built on three core, inseparable values:
Sustainability
From climate goals and circularity to biodiversity and a profound respect for our planet.
Inclusion
A commitment to diversity, accessibility, and affordability, ensuring that the transformation leaves no one behind.
Aesthetics
A focus on quality of experience, style, and design beyond mere functionality, creating spaces that uplift the human spirit.

🌿 Interiotecture
An Official Partner’s Perspective
As an official partner of the New European Bauhaus, interiotecture.org is proud to stand at the intersection of this visionary movement and the world of interior architecture and design. Our online magazine is not just a publication; it is a platform for action and inspiration, deeply aligned with the NEB’s goals and perspective.
We believe that the principles of the NEB are inherently woven into the fabric of our discipline. Interior architecture is the art of shaping human experience within enclosed spaces—it is where sustainability meets lived reality, where aesthetics directly impact well-being, and where inclusive design creates a sense of belonging for everyone.
As the NEB continues to evolve and strengthen its role in the clean transition, interiotecture.org will be at the forefront, documenting this transformation, celebrating its achievements, and contributing our unique voice to this beautiful and essential endeavour. Visit the official NEB website to learn more about this initiative and explore the vast array of projects shaping our future.
